Granny’s Fried Apple Pies: Hostess at Home!

Every American kid has the nutritionally lethal snack food from childhood that sang to their soul at some point. For me, it was Hostess Fruit Pies — the apple ones. (I also dug blueberry up until the point where I won a pie eating contest with them and was put off forever). It’s the definition of mass-produced industrial food, but my Southern Granny offhandedly mentioned one day that they used to make their own before it was ever a 99-cent wax sleeved Walgreen’s option. She taught me her secrets (lard, basically) and it became my first piece for The Takeout.
